In this session we will unpack a range of residency models, from socially engaged programs to research and studio-based opportunities. Discover how different residencies work, what they offer artists, and how they can open up new possibilities, connections and ways of working.
Meet the Facilitator
Maxxi, Minaxi May, Engagement Producer, ART ON THE MOVE
Maxxi, is a multidisciplinary artist, who exhibits with Art Collective WA, and has a PhD from Murdoch University. She has held residencies including: through Artsource in Switzerland and Sydney; with Barking Gecko Arts throughout regional WA; PICA; Fremantle Arts Centre; Perth Children’s Hospital; and schools in the metro area. This year, she will undertake a collaboration and research exchange residency with the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial (IOTA) in India. She was the WA Team Leader for the 2017 Venice Biennale, and established and managed PICA’s Education Program.

Alex Desebrook, Artistic Director – Galleries, Cannery Arts Centre
Alex is an artist, producer and facilitator with over 20 years’ experience in programming, artist development and practice across artforms. She is Artistic Director of the Cannery Arts Centre’s gallery & AIR program.
Chelsea Hopkins-Allan, Independent Artist
Chelsea Hopkins-Allan is an Albany-based painter and former environmental scientist whose work uses curiosity and wonder to build awareness, community participation and action in local environmental issues, research, biodiversity and conservation.
